At Beck Row Primary Academy, we follow a broad and balanced curriculum, which aims to support and interest the individuals at our school. We have built the curriculum around the New National Curriculum aims and objectives and work in cycles within our Key Stages to enable pupils to explore a full curriculum over their time at school.
English is taught every day from Year 1 to Year 6 at Beck Row Primary Academy. Our English work is built around reading books on the Pie Corbet Reading Spine, which where possible are linked to our half termly topic themes. Using these books we encourage writing across a range of genres and for different purposes. In addition to this, we also have a daily Guided Reading session, which enables us to use books to develop understanding including inferential and deductive questioning to deepen their understanding of a text. In Key Stage 1 and Early Years we also have a 20 minute phonics session. Our phonics is based on letters and sounds and uses the LCP phonics scheme.
Our Maths lessons are taught every day in Year 1 to 6 and incorporate a range of skills linked to mental maths and written mathematical calculations, dependant on the appropriateness at different ages. We use the White Rose Maths scheme of work to underpin the use of using concrete resources, pictorial resources and then abstract concepts.
At Beck Row we usually teach science as a stand-alone subject. We use the programmes of study from the National Curriculum to support our planning. All of our science work looks to develop children’s understanding of investigation and observation through the working scientifically objectives in the curriculum.
Over their time at Beck Row children will learn about the following areas of science:
